The average Shopify conversion rate is between 1.4% and 2.5%. If your store's rate is lower than this then please keep reading.

Your goal is to answer your customers’ questions and address objections in real-time. Have you clearly shown them:

  1. The shipping costs and delivery times?

  3. How the product looks, works, and benefits them?

You need to communicate exactly why your product is valuable, easy to use, and quick to get. Minimise any buying friction, risk, or hesitation - make the decision feel effortless. Show that your product is amazing and low-risk - a true no-brainer.

Conversion is also influenced by the quality of your traffic. Other key levers include digital wallets, shipping transparency and tracking, customer support, reviews, high-quality product images, clear features and benefits, and site speed (mostly handled by Shopify).

You want to think of yourself as a salesperson - like you were dealing with a customer face to face. Always think: what does this person need to hear and know to buy this thing?

That said, those who abandon checkout are warm leads. They’ve shown interest in your store and are often close to buying.

Data and experience show that shipping costs are the biggest factor driving abandonment - people dislike paying for shipping. The next most common factors are payment methods and returns/exchanges. Often, users simply give up at friction points.

Easy wins to reduce cart abandonment:

  1. Offer fast, simple payment methods (for South Africans, Stitch Payments is the best option).
  2. Have a generous returns and exchange policy - you want to take on the risk, not the customer. It's scary, but think of some a guarantees to offer.
  3. Make free shipping compelling - it should kick in slightly above the average order value.
  4. Clearly display any paid shipping costs before checkout.
  5. Create powerful abandoned checkout email automations with strong subject lines, clear value propositions, and clarity.

To grow your store and increase revenue without paid ads, focus on a combination of conversion optimisation, organic traffic, and email marketing. Key strategies include:

  1. Improve the conversion of your site - make it easy for visitors to buy by reducing friction and clearly communicating value.
  2. Boost organic traffic with SEO - optimise your site so more people find you naturally through search engines.
  3. Create free, organic content - share valuable posts, guides, or videos to attract and engage potential customers.
  4. Email marketing - reach your audience without paid ads by sending newsletters, promotions, and useful content.
  5. Set up email automations to capture abandoned checkouts and welcome new customers - ensure no potential sale is lost and every customer feels valued.
  6. Consider affiliate marketing to leverage other people's efforts and audiences. Affiliates will happily market your product for a commission.

Sixty per cent of e-commerce revenue comes from email marketing. To capitalise on this, focus on growing your email list with strong lead magnets, such as a free shipping coupon on the first order or a free gift. These prospects are warm, and you can build immense goodwill by sending valuable, well - crafted emails.

Subscriptions are particularly effective. Use automated emails for non-buyers and retarget them with Google and Meta Ads.
